They call it “the sweetest little fair in Sonoma County”

SUN AT LAST…

Monday, June 13th, 2011

The pool is open and so is Johnson’s Beach. Burke’s Canoes is going full blast, Soar Canoe and Kayak Rental  and the Canopy Tours are booking up fast.

Saturday, June 18th from noon to 4:00 PM there is the Art in the Park afternoon with the Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods, which is a free event except for parking fees. On July 9th there is the Gourmet Hike and Silent Auction which sells out quickly.

July brings a couple of nearby Independence Day celebrations.  Monte Rio celebrates on Saturday, July 2nd and Guerneville’s fireworks display is on Monday the 3rd of July.  Who does not like fireworks?  You can go to the events or watch them from the grounds at Creekside Inn

The Friday evening Occidental Farmers Market is open with a great selection of local produce, cheese, honey and crafts.  It is hard to pass up the great food stands from Mexican and Indian fare to my favorite Gerard’s Paella and pizza made in a wood fired oven.

New this year:  Papa Finch and two babies-barely visible just 2  eyes and 2 beaks.

The Russian River Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence do their famous Bingo.

It’s Soup Weather

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

When the weather outside is cold and wet, a hot bowl of soup hits the spot.  We have been on a search for the best clam chowder nearby.   It all started because of a local food blog in the Press Democrat‘s Bite Club.  We tried Henweigh Cafe first and found it to be very authentic, good and satisfying.  We also tried the corn chowder which we thought was super.    Later in the week we tried the chowder at Spud Point Crab Company.  This chowder has been voted best in Bodega Bay and did not disappoint.  We believe that it is less traditional, creamier and more highly seasoned than Henweigh’s.   Since it is crab season, we tried the crab sandwich too. Wow, very simple, lots of crab, a soft roll and super tasty.

Nearer to Creekside is the ever popular Garden Grill. We had a very good bowl of chowder there too.
